Promat to highlight the need to test for fire safety in repurposed concrete

Passive fire specialist Promat will highlight the need to fire test protective solutions for repurposed concrete while exploring the sustainability benefits of reuse at the upcoming Concrete Expo UK.

Focusing on the environmental benefits of repurposing concrete frames as opposed to demolishing and rebuilding structures, UK Commercial Director for Promat Joshua Slack will also discuss the need to ensure fire safety compliance in a talk at the event, which is part of UK Construction Week.

Speaking at the two-day expo at the London ExCel, which takes place from May 8-9, Joshua will explain how manufacturers can fire test for concrete protection, detailing how to apply fire test data when designing projects with repurposed concrete.

‌This is the first time Promat has brought its knowledge of passive fire protection to the event, which is a natural fit for the global brand as it offers solutions to protect load-bearing concrete structures in the event of a fire.

As an Associate Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers, Joshua will be able to offer insights into the issues surrounding concrete in the event of a fire.

While concrete in itself is known for its fire resistance, repurposed concrete frames often need additional fire protection, in particular when the use of the building changes from one planning class to another.

Joshua said: “The Concrete Expo is an ideal forum to focus on the sustainability benefits of reusing concrete, but also take a deeper look at building safety, as it attracts leading suppliers and service providers, as well as providing insights into the latest industry innovations.

“Along with highlighting the need for fire testing, Promat is keen to focus on the broader themes facing the industry, such as embodied carbon and the benefits of repurposing concrete frames, together with offering advice for manufacturers on how they can fire test for concrete protection.

“With the increasing amount of legislation, both from a sustainability and safety perspective, this is a great opportunity to take a closer look at how concrete can be repurposed while ensuring the integrity of the building.”
