The National Chemical Emergency Centre (NCEC), provider of Chemdata and Chemsafe, has expanded its expert team of trainers. Hazmat Academy has appointed the Fire Service chemist Josh Allaway and experienced associates Jon Crawley and Ian Duckworth. The Academy experts’ combined experience now equates to over of 100 years of industry-leading expertise for responders to draw upon to help them meet their training goals.
Josh is a leading voice in the world of hazmat. He has experience working in a laboratory environment and within emergency response. Before joining NCEC, he worked at the Fire Service College as the subject matter expert for hazmat and fire science. Josh is also a trained firefighter and spent several years responding for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service. His technical and operational knowledge and experience (including his Initial Incident Command qualification) mean that he is ideally placed to provide input to and deliver hazmat response training.
Jon has over 30 years of experience with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and retired as Group Manager and service lead for Hazmat and DIM (detection, identification and monitoring). As well as a trainer for the Hazmat Academy Jon is currently an England and Wales National Resilience DIM Instructor.
Ian has 27 years’ experience in the UK Fire and Rescue Service, during which time he was a Hazmat Advisor and Hazmat Department Manager as well as a HDIM Advisor. Following this he has worked for The Fire Service College delivering hazmat courses to both the public and private sectors. He has a Diploma in Hazardous Materials Operations from Coventry University and is a Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

The Hazmat Academy have upcoming emergency response courses that are available to book today. All courses align with health and safety legislation and industry best practice. The emergency and chemical response courses are accredited by the International Organisation for Industrial Emergency Services Management (JOIFF).
Emergency response courses include:
- Hazardous materials first responder – 1 November.
- Hazardous materials instructor – 4 October.
- Hazardous materials adviser initial – 22 November and 21 February.
- Hazardous materials adviser revalidation – 1 November and 29 November.
The Hazmat Academy are also able to cater for organisations with bespoke training requirements, to meet specific standards and/or emergency response needs. The available chemical response courses cover a range of different topics, including chemical spill response, chemical hazard awareness and response to incidents involving chemical exposures, as well as site incident controller and hazmat 1st response courses. They also offer distance learning with topics ranging from Chemdata, waste fires, batteries, illegal drug laboratories and more.
