To celebrate its 50th anniversary, NCEC has announced that it will be launching its inaugural Hazmat Awards at its Hazmat conference – the ‘must go’ event for professionals in the field!
Since its conception in 1973, NCEC is proud to have been supporting the Hazmat community, and to mark its 50th anniversary the newly launched awards will celebrate achievements in the Hazmat field from both individuals and teams. The categories include:
- Outstanding newly qualified Hazmat Officer
- Outstanding achievement by a Hazmat Officer
- Outstanding achievement by a Police CBRN or transport (DG) Officer
- Outstanding achievement to improve Hazmat safety in industry
- Outstanding training initiative for specialist Hazmat staff
- Outstanding training initiative for non-specialist staff
- Outstanding equipment development
- Outstanding research in the field of Hazmat.

The closing date for nominations is 31 March 2023 and the awards will be presented at the Hazmat 2023 conference dinner on 24 May 2023.

The ‘premier Hazmat event’ is back for 2023 with a packed programme to educate and inform professionals involved in chemical incident response on best practices in the Hazmat field.
The two-day conference draws on the knowledge and experience of a broad range of multi-agency Hazmat professionals and industry leaders, including NCEC’s emergency responders and chemical experts.
Delegates are drawn from fire services, police forces, airports, ambulance services, the MOD, the chemical industry (including the pharmaceutical giants) and bodies such as the Environment Agency and the Met Office.
Attending Hazmat 2023 will help you keep up to date with hazardous materials’ response, chemical exposure monitoring, emergency planning and developments in legislation and technology. It gives you the best opportunity to deepen your understanding of these issues and, more importantly, provides you with practical ways to address them through:

- networking with like-minded professionals
- sharing best practices.

NCEC are the chemical specialists at Ricardo Plc and include chemical risk and regulatory experts who provide support to help reduce the impact that chemical incidents have on people and the environment.
For 50 years NCEC has performed a central role in Chemsafe, the UK chemical industry’s voluntary scheme for providing expert advice to the emergency services. More than 300 calls per year are taken from the UK emergency services relating to spills, fires, reactions and other incidents in all location types, e.g. on the road network, site based, domestic settings, etc. It also trains the UK emergency services in chemical incident response and how to use Chemsafe.
