This October, the Capita-owned Fire Service College, together with event sponsor Elkhart Brass, will host HOT, a specialist thought leadership event focused on high-rise firefighting.
The first of its kind, HOT is a two-day event on 21 and 22 October delivering a series of seminars and round-table discussions alongside practical hands-on training workshops at the renowned fire-training facility. Professional guest speakers from the UK, USA and Spain, including the cast of Elkhart Brass’ popular US video series Brass Tacks Hard Facts, will come together to discuss operational tactics for high-rise firefighting and determine best practices for these challenging incidents.
The practical workshops create an opportunity to gain hands-on experience on the training ground, whilst testing the newest range of fire nozzles from Elkhart Brass, the XD EN series. Training sessions will focus on:
- Larger-diameter hose management techniques
- Smoothbore branch/nozzle techniques
- Riser outlet operations and considerations – PRVs etc.
- Know your flow
- Water Mapping – assessing effectiveness of both straight and fog streams

In addition to accessing a full host of seminars and workshops, tickets to HOT include accommodation for two nights at The Fire Service College and a formal dinner to conclude the event on Saturday evening.
HOT is set to be a key event in the high-rise firefighting community and will bring together industry professionals to share best-practice techniques and draw on individual experiences in dealing with high rise fires.
Clair Mowbray, Director of Learning Delivery and Transformation at the Fire Service College, said: ‘It’s a privilege to be able to offer this event which will draw on the wealth of experience of firefighters who have deployed various tactics to fight fires at height. By comparing the different approaches taken, it will help UK fire and rescue services better understand what their tactical approaches would be and, ultimately, ensure better and safer outcomes. We are looking forward to welcoming more than 10 guest speakers from across the UK, Ireland, Spain and the US for the event which will provide a mix of round-table discussions and practical sessions on our training ground.’
Chris Martin, Director of Product Marketing for Elkhart Brass commented: ‘Hands-on firefighter training has been a pillar of our identity at Elkhart Brass, whether instructing, organizing, or supporting; in this case all three. We are honoured and excited to be able to bring this approach to the European Fire Service and being able to bridge knowledge between countries. This will be a top-notch event, at a top-notch facility bringing together the best minds to better understand how to tackle one of the most challenging of fires a brigade can face, a fire in a high-rise building. Safe Fleet Fire, EMS & Industrial Group, whom Elkhart Brass is a part of, is honoured to sponsor and have our name associated with this event.’
