While the number of house fires in Scotland has dropped by nearly 17% over the past decade, wildfires have become a bigger issue. These outdoor fires, which cover more than 1,000 square metres, are getting larger and lasting longer – some going on for over five days. This demands a much bigger response effort. We need equipment that can withstand and support us, but like other public sector organisations, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) are doing more but with fewer resources. We expect this trend to continue.

Simon, what are the main challenges you come across when rolling out new communication systems, how does Radiocoms address potential resistance from end users?
The main challenges with new deployments are often budget constraints, integration with existing systems and the need for extensive training to ensure personnel are proficient with the new technology. To address potential resistance or hesitancy from end-users, we employ a hands-on approach by providing trials for extended periods. This encourages stakeholder buy-in and helps identify any challenges early. Take Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA): through their comprehensive trials, they identified adjustments that needed to be made to the MOTOTRBO R7 to ensure it could withstand the rigours of a fireground and integrate with the technologies they use. Now other fire services are benefiting from these adjustments.

Real-world applications
Real-life applications demonstrate the tangible benefits of connected devices, especially with the integration of breathing apparatus, or interoperability for multi-sector or cross-border attendance. Can you share any specific examples where equipment has noticeably enhanced safety or operational outcomes in the field?
SB: There are a few that stand out for me – again GMCA but also Scottish Fire and Thames Valley Fire Control Service (TVFCS). Radiocoms’ partnership with these underscores the impact technology can have. The deployment of the MOTOTRBO R7 and NS750 remote speaker microphones has significantly improved their operational efficiency and safety to meet the current NFCC guidelines. Whilst the build of the device takes into consideration a connection with BA from manufacturers such as MSA, Dräger and Intersprio.
Regarding interoperability, TVFCS (Buckinghamshire, Royal Berkshire and Oxfordshire FRS), are now all utilising the same equipment, this consistency allows for an integrated command-and-control structure. Incident commanders can communicate directly with all crews, ensuring that strategies and tactics are uniformly understood and executed.
