Dr Nikki Power is a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Psychology. Researching teamwork, interoperability and decision-making in extreme environments. Her Research focuses on teamwork, interoperability and the socio-cognitive processes involved in decision-making and teamwork in high-pressure work environments. She has researched the psychology of indecision, identifying the principles that predict why decision-making can derail and ways to overcome it. Nikki has also conducted research on the psychology of interoperability as part of a funded project, working closely with the Emergency Services.
In this episode, Nikki talks about the Joint Emergency Services Interoperability Programme (JESIP) and its importance during a multi-agency incident. The concept of the interoperable leader is explored and its value in relationship building before and during an incident.
Nikki’s podcast discusses the dilemmas faced by incident commanders, which can lead to an inability to make a decision. This can lead to ‘decision inertia’ when commanders try to gather more information, giving the illusion that this will improve the end result.
