For over 40 years, Quelfire has been one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of specialist passive fire protection for buildings. The company has built its name on a long-standing commitment to high-quality certified products, including fire-containment systems for pipe, duct and electrical service penetrations, as well as linear joints and cavity barriers. As part of its offering, Quelfire provides a range of valuable products and services to specifiers, architects, engineers and contractors.
One-stop-shop system
The Quelfire ‘one-stop-shop’ system comprises a number of the manufacturer’s high-quality products: QuelStop Fire Batt, QuelStop CE-marked Intumescent Acrylic Sealant, QF2 Fire Protection Compound, QuelStop HPE Intumescent Graphite Sealant and QuelCoil Continuous Intuwrap. Together the products have been rigorously tested as a complete system and come with Quelfire’s expert technical service. They work seamlessly to retain the integrity of fire compartments while also saving time and labour costs on site.
The firestopping system is suitable for use with most common service penetrations as well as other more uncommon or unusual applications. The products are tested to the current standards including BS EN1366-3: 2009 and BS476: Part 20: 1987. A number of the Quelfire products are also CE marked, further demonstrating the quality of the products. While not mandatory for penetration seals, a CE-mark certification ensures manufacturers offer a tested, audited and repeatable system solution.
Sourcing passive fire-protection systems from a single supplier has a range of benefits. For one, it gives contractors additional time to complete more quality installations and for commercial teams to present an enhanced values proposition at tender stage. Users can have greater confidence in the performance of the installation in the knowledge that the products are sourced from a single, reputable supplier who has tested them together as a system and will offer extensive technical support.
Obtaining a system from a single supplier can also reduce potential logistical challenges when it comes to on-site delivery. The majority of products included in Quelfire’s firestopping system are available on next-day delivery and the company has also recently launched its QuelQuick same-day delivery service across the North West. With vast experience supplying high-quality, independently tested firestopping solutions, Quelfire has developed a reputation for the support it offers its customers. This service includes unlimited technical advice at specification stage, overcoming on-site complications and ongoing support at installation stage.
Cast-in fire collar
Another of Quelfire’s fire-protection solutions is its ‘Cast-In Fire Collar’, which prevents the spread of fire through plastic pipes and cables penetrating concrete floors. The collar is constructed from a robust polypropylene material and contains a high-performance intumescent material. Quelfire will cut the fire collars down to specific sizes or apply the accompanying extension tube prior to despatch, meaning order fulfilments will arrive ready to use if the floor slab thickness has been specified at order stage.
The QuelCast collars can contribute to a 40% saving in material and installation times compared to traditional on-site methods. In particular, they eliminate the requirement for timber formwork or concrete drilling and also avoid installers having to work at height to retrospectively fit collars or wraps after the floor slabs are in place. Furthermore, once installed on site they are unaffected by weathering thanks to their Type X durability, while a robust lid helps to eliminate a number of health-and-safety issues for main contractors, such as preventing items from falling through the aperture.
The fire collar can provide up to four hours’ fire protection to maintain the fire rating of concrete floor slabs. It is suitable for a wide range of pipes and generally doesn’t require backfilling. To meet the requirements of all the relevant building regulations, installers are advised to follow the installation procedures provided by Quelfire. The company can also provide free technical support to aid the correct installation of the collar and ensure that the firestopping of a building is carried out effectively and that compartments will perform as required for the lifetime of a building.
