New research has revealed the North East of England to be the fire capital of England, with Cleveland, Tyne and Wear, and Durham and Darlington reporting more fires per person than anywhere else.
The study carried out by safety experts Direct365 analysed Freedom of Information data from 34 Fire and Rescue Services in England to reveal the extent to which these services are used and where they are in highest demand.
Fire and Rescue Services across England were called out to over 140,000 fires over the last year, with callout rates varying drastically based on location.
The areas of England with the most fires per 100,000 people:
- Cleveland – 1,078
- Tyne and Wear – 712
- Durham and Darlington – 709
- South Yorkshire – 502
- West Yorkshire – 465
- Merseyside – 447
- Cumbria – 404
- Greater Manchester – 372
- Lancashire – 352
- Nottinghamshire – 306
A striking geographic trend shows that all three areas with the highest number of fire-related callouts are located in the North East of England.
Leading the national figures is Cleveland Fire and Rescue Service, which received the highest volume of fire callouts per capita. In the past year, there were 1,078 fire related callouts per 100,000 population.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service received the second highest number of callouts to fires, with 712 callouts per 100,000 people.
In third position is Durham and Darlington. The Fire and Rescue Service received 709 fire related callouts per 100,000 people.

- West Midlands – 191
- Berkshire – 197
- West Sussex – 198
- Hampshire and Isle of Wight – 204
- London – 206
- Dorset and Wiltshire – 216
- Cambridgeshire – 216
- Shropshire – 217
The South and South East regions of England demonstrate significantly lower rates of fire-related incidents per capita. In fact, seven of the ten authorities with the fewest callouts are concentrated in these areas.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service received the lowest volume of fire-related callouts nationally, with only 96 per 100,000 people in the past year. This makes it the only service in the country to record a figure below 100.
In second position is Oxfordshire, which received 189 fire-related callouts per 100,000 people.
The West Midlands follows closely behind in third place, receiving 191 callouts per 100,000 people.
