Firefighters in Cornwall have been supporting the charity Movember for a number of years.
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and male suicide.
Movember 2021 saw the Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service’s team raise a record amount. A massive £8,215 was raised by the team through all avenues of fund raising, from moustache growing to dancing.
The crew at Liskeard Fire Station held a 24-hour dance marathon, which saw them keep at least two members of the crew on the specially made dance floor at all times. Starting at 19:00, each hour had a theme, and the entire event was lived streamed on social media.
The team topped the UK fire services challenge with a comfortable win and finished second in the UK emergency services challenge, losing the top spot in the last few days to Wiltshire Police, who raised a staggering £8,814.
As a result, the team were invited to the annual Movember awards at the Oval space in London. The team won the ‘HAVIN’ FUN DOIN’ GOOD’ which was presented to team captain Graham Smith.
Movember said: ‘This award goes out to all the hosts who have brought people together in the name of men’s health. From quizzes to parties, these mo-ments are what make Movember special.’
The nominations for this award were: WIT Fitness & Grenade, Mo Bros Rugby Charity Match, Graham Smith – Cornwall Fire & Rescue, Pringle Pie Night, Bedford School, Fergus Stevens, Moustaches in November Golfing Eccentrics.
