We are several friends who are currently planning our most ambitious and difficult challenge yet, which we have named ‘Locks, Steps and Two Worthy Causes’, a massive 167-mile walk starting from the Firefighters memorial at St Paul’s Cathedral in London back to our local pub, The Maverick in Amblecote. We intend to complete this journey in 72 hours or less, starting on 9 Sept 2021. We are walking in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity and Anthony Nolan, which are two amazing charities, doing some incredible work, which you can view in the links we have provided below:

A little bit of background info about the team: we are a group of friends who all drink at our local pub, The Maverick in Amblecote. Over the last 15 years we have been raising money for many local charities through our annual cricket match, Fire Service v The Maverick, along with our charity quiz and raffles which have been a great success. A few years ago we decided to add a long-distance challenge every year, the first being 100 miles in 48 hours, then 125 miles from the coast of Wales and last year 100km in less than 24 hours. Luckily all the challenges finish at The Maverick Pub for a well-deserved beer!
Over the last 3 years we have raised in excess of £30,000 for local charities, but this year is our last long-distance challenge (although we have said that at the end of every challenge). As this will be our last and most challenging event, we agreed that we wanted to raise money for causes that mean a lot to the team. With four members of the team being firefighters currently serving with the West Midlands Fire Service and having had one of our team member’s wives directly benefiting from the amazing work The Fire Fighters Charity did for her after a serious accident, we all considered this a worthy cause. Also, one of the team members donated stem cells to his brother, who was suffering from Leukaemia and, looked after by Anthony Nolan, has made a full recovery. He recently competed in the World Transplant Games in 2019. So, as you can imagine, these two charities mean so much to the team and many thousands of people across the local area and country!
