In an era where environmental consciousness is at the forefront of global discussions, industries across the spectrum are re-evaluating their practices to minimise their ecological footprint. The fire trade is no different, as it embraces a seamless transition towards a more sustainable supply chain.
In this article, Toria Jones, head of marketing at CheckFire, delves into the fire-safety supplier’s commitment to sustainability through its innovative initiatives, particularly the launch of The Green Range, and how these eco-conscious solutions aim to help reshape the landscape of the fire trade.
Sustainability in the fire trade
Throughout the supply chain, businesses have the power to positively impact people and the planet. With sustainability becoming a key factor in end users’ purchase decisions – and at a national level with new regulations potentially set to be introduced in 2025 – there is a growing demand for eco-conscious solutions within the fire trade.
In fact, it can enhance a business’s position in the market and contribute to a greener future. However, this shift towards sustainability doesn’t have to come at the expense of the quality, performance or compliance of fire-safety equipment.
Recognising the need for environmentally responsible solutions, CheckFire has proactively taken measures to align with the expectations of its customers and those who may seek greener alternatives in the future.
Introducing The Green Range
With the launch of The Green Range, this is an initiative that aims to provide access to sustainable fire-safety products and services that not only add value to businesses but also contribute to a more environmentally conscious supply chain.
From its fire extinguisher recycling service to innovative product developments, The Green Range embodies CheckFire’s dedication to sustainability and helps customers achieve environmental objectives while maintaining the high performance their brands are known for.
These environmentally conscious products and services will be gradually introduced throughout the year, with the range identifiable by its distinctive green crosshair logo.
Fire extinguisher recycling service
One of the flagship services under The Green Range is CheckFire’s dedicated fire extinguisher recycling service. Designed for CheckFire trade customers, this service streamlines the process of collecting, dismantling and processing fire extinguishers, thereby championing environmental responsibility.
In the fire trade industry, raising awareness of fire extinguisher recyclability is important, fostering both procedural efficiency and environmental sustainability. Fire extinguishers, like all manufactured goods, have a finite lifespan, necessitating adherence to BS 5306-3: 2017 regulations, which stipulate regular maintenance and servicing. This includes an annual service, followed by a five-year extended service for water, foam, wet chemical and powder fire extinguishers, while a 10-year refurbishment or replacement is required for CO2 extinguishers.
Conducting regular visual assessments, as well as the annual service, is essential to identifying signs of damage, misuse or vandalism. When the time comes for replacement, responsible disposal practices become imperative. Thus, opting for recycling, as opposed to discarding into general waste, for example, emerges as a responsible choice.
The process of recycling fire extinguishers demands proper handling, storage, emptying and disposal by trained professionals to prevent accidents and environmental contamination. The environmental benefits from this service are significant, including reducing carbon emissions, minimising pollution and preserving ecosystems.
By ensuring compliance in the disposal of hazardous waste, CheckFire not only saves companies time and hassle but also sets a standard for responsible waste management within the industry.

enviroFoam: a sustainable solution for fire safety
In addition to its recycling service, CheckFire is revolutionising fire safety by introducing CommanderEDGE enviroFoam, a new and improved fluorine-free foam fire extinguisher range. The pressing need for such improvements stems from recent discussions surrounding fire extinguishers containing Per- and PolyFluoroAlkylated Substances (PFAS), notably used in aqueous film forming foam (AFFF). While effective in combating Class B fires, studies have revealed the detrimental environmental and health impacts of PFAS, prompting bans on certain chemicals since 2020 and imminent legal restrictions.
Addressing this urgent call for environmentally responsible solutions, CheckFire’s enviroFoam range represents a significant step. By offering fluorine-free fire extinguishers, CheckFire not only meets but exceeds industry standards, ensuring optimal performance while prioritising sustainability.
The enviroFoam fluorine-free foam fire extinguishers boast impressive ratings of 34A 183B for the 9-litre unit and 27A 144B for the 6-litre unit, surpassing expectations in combating Class B flammable liquid fires, as well as Class A combustible material fires. Furthermore, the internationally recognised BS Kitemark certification highlights the reliability and quality of these fire extinguishers, instilling added confidence in customers.
Embracing CheckFire’s fluorine-free CommanderEDGE enviroFoam range allows businesses to reinforce their commitment to becoming greener while strengthening fire-protection measures. By choosing these innovative fire extinguishers in Class A and B fire risk settings, organisations not only safeguard their assets but also contribute to a greener future for all.
The impact of The Green Range
The importance of prioritising environmental sustainability and social responsibility cannot be overstated in today’s business landscape. As evidenced by a recent survey conducted by IBM1 in 2023, which highlighted that 68% of respondents prioritise environmental sustainability and 65% prioritise social responsibility, it’s evident that consumers and businesses alike are placing increasing emphasis on these values.
Within the fire trade specifically, where safety is paramount, the importance of environmental sustainability takes on added significance. By incorporating eco-conscious solutions, such as those offered in The Green Range, companies can not only fulfil their ethical obligations but also contribute to a safer and healthier environment for all.
At CheckFire, we’ve witnessed first-hand the increasing demand for recycling services and the positive impact they yield. Each month, we responsibly recycle between 30,000 and 40,000 fire extinguishers, ensuring their safe disposal and subsequent reuse of almost all components. This not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also supports infrastructure development overseas, illustrating the tangible benefits of our commitment to responsible waste management.
Looking ahead
As the fire trade continues to evolve, there is a clear trajectory towards sustainability-driven practices. For CheckFire, The Green Range is just the beginning. With ongoing product developments and a steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility, we have further exciting eco-conscious announcements on the horizon.
As businesses and consumers increasingly prioritise sustainability, the fire trade will inevitably adapt to meet these evolving demands. Consequently, the future of fire safety is undeniably becoming greener, with innovative solutions driving positive change across the industry.
