The fire and rescue sector is entering a period of significant transformation. Across the UK and internationally, services are being asked to do more with less, respond to increasingly complex incidents, and maintain ever-higher standards of operational readiness. At the same time, the equipment used on the frontline, whether for rescue, hazmat, decontamination, water control, or general operational support, is becoming more advanced, more specialised, and more essential to safe and effective response.
This evolution brings new opportunities, but it also introduces new pressures. Procurement teams must balance performance, reliability, and lifecycle cost. Fleet and asset managers are expected to maintain equipment availability despite tightening budgets and ageing inventories. Operational crews rely on tools that must work the first time, every time, in unpredictable and often hazardous conditions. And across the sector, there is a growing recognition that equipment ownership is no longer just about buying a product; it is about ensuring long-term support, serviceability, and resilience.
Against this backdrop, the industry is reassessing how equipment is purchased, maintained, and supported. Leasing models, subscription-based services, extended warranties, digital monitoring, and rapid replacement programmes are becoming more common in other sectors. The question now is whether these approaches have a place in fire and rescue and if so, what form they should take.
To explore these themes, we are conducting an industrywide survey aimed at capturing the real experiences, preferences, and expectations of fire and rescue professionals. Whether you work in procurement, manage fleet and assets, oversee operational crews, or use equipment on the ground, your perspective is vital. The goal is not to evaluate any specific product or supplier, but to build a clearer, more representative picture of how the sector currently operates and where it may be heading.
Your insights will help inform future editorial features, support industry dialogue, and highlight the challenges and opportunities that matter most to those working in the field. The survey takes only a few minutes to complete, and all responses will be treated confidentially. Individual answers will not be published, and any findings will be aggregated to protect anonymity.
As a thank you for taking part, all respondents who provide their contact details will be entered into a prize draw for a brand new iPad. Participation in the draw is entirely optional, and you may still complete the survey anonymously if you prefer.

The fire and rescue community has always thrived on shared knowledge, collaboration, and continuous improvement. By contributing your voice, you are helping shape a clearer understanding of how the sector can remain ready, resilient, and well-supported in a rapidly changing landscape.
